Sean, I've always followed the general formula ... good person, good at what they do, and a good sense of humor. You'd be surprised at the artistic talent on a psych unit. Ever want to hear good music without having to drown yourself in a case of beer? Try checking into a mental ward for an hour. There's always a lively piano tucked in the corner,. getting plenty of play. Other underlying positive features for a schizophrenic mother? I once treated this schizophrenic who could afford his monthly rent, but not a month of food. So, five times a week, he dressed up at 11 AM, drove to one of the mortuaries and attended a noon funeral. Always plenty of food. I expressed the concern to this patient that all those funerals might be a bit depressing. But he viewed the services in just the opposite light. His perspective? Where else can you go and hear nothing but positives said about a person? Under most illnesses, there is still a decent person. Good luck. Bill
